Applicable Community Size
No votes yet

The planning and design of pedestrian/bicycle friendly routes focuses on safety.  The practice of requiring pedestrian / bicycle friendly design that is on an equal footing with vehicle transportation planning provides better opportunities to consider safety, improve accessibility, and support public health.

Most of the activity around pedestrian and bicycle friendly design is to retrofit existing roadways so that vehicles, bikes and pedestrians safely and efficiently share the space available in the right of way.  This includes requirements for ADA compliance.

This tool focuses on how to incorporate safe bicycle and pedestrian practices into your community, making the roads a safe place for all users. Some other tools that would be beneficial to reference are complete streets and walkable blocks.
